The Long and the Short of: Truck Training
Here it is, the most frequently asked questions that our Enrolments Officers get asked about doing truck training with the CITC, first the short answer, then the detail.
Q: What class of trucks does the CITC train people in?
The Short: Medium Rigid, Heavy Rigid and Heavy Combination.
The Long: Medium Rigid Truck Licence (MR)
is for trucks up to and including 15 ton in weight. The Heavy Rigid Truck Licence (HR) is for trucks up to and including 24 ton. Heavy Combination Truck Licence (HC)
is for semitrailers and below. The Heavy Combination Truck Licence does not include Multi Combination Truck Licence
(AKA B-Double, Road Train etc).
Q: What is involved in obtaining my Medium Rigid Truck Licence (MR)?
The Short: Satisfactorily meeting all
requirements of the course.
The Long: The standard amount of time required to complete an MR course is 9 hours. In some cases additional training will be required. Any additional training will incur an additional charge. Participants must be 17.5 years of age and have held a car or light truck licence for a minimum of 1 year to attend this course.
Q: What is involved in obtaining my Heavy Rigid Truck Licence (HR)?
The Short: Satisfactorily meeting all requirements of the course.
The Long: The standard amount of time required to complete an HR course is
12 hours. In some cases additional training will be required. Any additional training will incur an additional charge. Participants must be 18.5 years of age and have held a car or light truck licence for a minimum of 2 years to attend this course.
Q: What is involved in obtaining my Heavy Combination Truck Licence (HC)?
The Short: Satisfactorily meeting all requirements of the course.
The Long: The standard amount of time required to complete an
HC course is 15 hours if you have held a MR or HR licence for at least 12 months or 33 hours if you are going straight from a car licence to the HC. In some cases additional training will be required. Any additional training will incur an additional charge. Participants must be 18.5 years of age and have held a car licence for 2 years with no restrictions or held a Heavy Rigid or Medium Rigid licence for 12 months to attend this course. If you are going from a car licence to an HC licence you will need to attend a weekend of largely theoretical training called a T.I.L.E. course. T.I.L.E. is
short for 'Training In Lieu of Experience'.
Q: Who will provide the training?
The Short: Courtesy Driving School.
The Long: Courtesy Driving School is one of the largest and longest running driving schools in South Australia. Their history of providing quality, personalised training has led to them becoming the CITC's preferred provider for truck training needs. John Rae and Troy Williams and their staff at Courtesy Driving School provide a full range of driver training, ranging from car to multi combination (B-Double) trucks as well as 4WD training and Dangerous Goods transportation.
Q: What information will I need to provide the Enrolments Officer with at the time of booking?
The Short:
You will need to have your CITB number and a valid South Australian
Driver's Licence.
The Long:
To do your truck training through the CITC you will need to have a valid CITB number. If you do not have a valid CITB number but you (or the Enrolments Officer) thinks you may be eligible for one, contact the CITB on (08) 8172 9500. To be eligible you must be a South Australian Resident who works in the construction industry. Other criteria may apply and the decision of the CITB regarding your eligibility is final.
If you are not eligible for a CITB number, contact Courtesy Driving School directly to make your booking on (08) 8345 4911.
In order to obtain your truck licence, participants must provide evidence of a current and valid South Australian Drivers Licence that fulfils all of the prerequisites for the class of truck you would like to train in (see the individual class sections for prerequisites).
Please note that if you have any overdue fines or other restrictions on your licence you may not be able to obtain your licence. If you think you may have any overdue fines or other restrictions on your licence you should contact Transport SA on (08) 8343 2222.
Q: When can I do MR, HR and HC training?
The Short: Monday to Saturday.
The Long: The practical training for each of these courses can be conducted between 6.30 am - 5.30 pm Monday to Saturday, subject to trainer and truck availability.
These course tend to book out well in advance, it is therefore unlikely that a course could be booked only one or two weeks in advance. It is recommended that the minimum amount of time for each training session is 1.5 hours for MR and 3 hours for HR and HC. The T.I.L.E. course (the theoretical bridging course that is required if you go from a car to an HC licence) is run once a month on both a Saturday and Sunday from 7.30 am - 5.30 pm.

Trainer Profile - Charlie Camilleri
Question: What do you get when a bloke starts his working life making surfboards, is then apprenticed to a motor mechanic, becomes a carpenter,
has
a stint at the old Department of Labour, before returning once more to the tools as a carpenter? You get Charlie Camilleri
who has been a trainer with the CITC since 2003.
Charlie's work background has provided him with the experience necessary to communicate with many different types of people.
From
apprentices to experienced workers, everybody appreciates Charlie's evident understanding of how a real site works and his amiable approach to conducting his courses.
If you (or any of your employees) have done a Greencard, Manual Handling, Scissorlift or
Asbestos course, then there is a good chance you've met Charlie and will understand why he is one of our most well liked
trainers.
For a full schedule of public courses that Charlie will be facilitating, please look at the Greencard II, Scissorlift and Asbestos courses here
If you would like to enquire about Charlie running a private company course either on your site or at one of our training facilities, please contact our Office Manager Chris Chevalier on 8443 6633 or email chris@citc.com.au. Please note that private courses do require minimum numbers, these vary from course to course.

Trainer Round-Up
Sometimes it seems like we don't see one of our trainers for weeks on end.
As those of you who have trained with us will know, our trainer's are a hardworking bunch, so their absence is not because they are skiving! It's because they are often away from our base in Adelaide for days or even weeks at a time training in regional SA, interstate and even overseas.
In the past few months CITC trainers have been all over the state. From Ceduna to Clare and
Leigh Creek
to Millicent the CITC has been running courses such as Asbestos Removal, Forklift, Crane, Dogging, Heights Training and Rigging. Supplying these courses to regional SA is a service that CITC is proud to offer.
In April, Lance Evans was in Darwin providing asbestos training to workplaces there, and he has been asked back to the NT to conduct further asbestos training in June. CITC is continuing to expand services to the Northern Territory. We anticipate that the frequency and variety of training to the Territory will greatly increase over the next 12 months.
For April, senior trainer Des Kelly wins the 'Best Travelled Trainer' award for spending three weeks in Sumatra, Indonesia (sorry Des, there are no prizes)! Sumatra is one of Indonesia's largest provinces and is situated on the same island as the tsunami ravaged province of Aceh.
Des conducted several Pendant Crane courses, resulting in 150 people earning their certificates (there are no government issued/regulated tickets in Indonesia for Pendant Crane). While Des was thrilled to hear 'Selamat datang di Sumatra' (Welcome to Sumatra) in early April, he was equally happy to say 'Selamet Tinggal' (Goodbye) when he came home!
In the last two months Charlie Camilleri, Sasha Reinbrecht, Trevor Pomeroy, John Rutter, Lance Evans and Des Kelly have all spent large amounts of time on the road. We are indebted to them, and indeed to all of our trainer's, for their dedication to
providing quality training
which
can mean that they are away from their families for weeks at a time.

Goodbye and Good luck!
Recently one of our senior trainers, Sab Feleppa, left the CITC to pursue other opportunities.
Sab had worked at CITC for 5 years.
On behalf of all of the CITC Board, managers, trainers and employees we wish you good luck with your new job
and every happiness for the future Sab!
