The Long and the Short of Licencing
Here are the long and the short answers to the most commonly asked questions regarding licencing:
Q. How long do I have to lodge my paperwork with Workplace Services?
The Short: 60 days.
The Long: You have 60 days from the date of the assessment to get the paperwork to Workplace Services. You need to take the white copy of the assessment notice together with the yellow form, (both issued by the assessor), to Workplace Services. While you are waiting for Workplace Services to issue your license, you can use the pink copy as evidence of a successful assessment. This pink copy is only valid for 60 days from the date of assessment.
Q. What if I don't get the paperwork to Workplace Services within 60 days?
The Short: You must be reassessed.
The Long: If you do not take the paperwork to Workplace Services within 60 days, you will have to be reassessed as Workplace Services will not accept late lodgement. If you have to be reassessed, you will generally need a minimum of 4 hours at $75 per hour ($300 + GST if applicable).
Q. What happens if I fail my assessment?
The Short: You will have to be reassessed after a minimum of 21 days.
The Long: If you have the required evidence of on site experience but fail the written and/or practical assessment, you can not be reassessed for 21 days.
If you have no evidence of on site experience and you
also fail the written and/or practical assessment, you will be advised to get on site experience before
being reassessed.
If you have no evidence of on site experience and you pass the written exam and the practical assessment, you have 60 days to get some on site experience and have this signed by a licenced operator. Once you have this, the assessor can give you the paperwork to go to Workplace Services and get the licence.
Q. What counts as evidence of on site experience?
The Short: See below!
The Long: Written and signed evidence, either a letter on company letterhead, a Statutory Declaration or a log book with hours signed off by a ticketed supervisor. The supervisor must hold the relevant ticket, i.e. if the log book is for dogging it must be signed off by a ticketed dogger.
Q. What if I am unable to get the experience in 60 days?
The Short: You may have to resit the written exam.
The Long: If you are unable to get on site experience within the 60 day time frame, you may have to resit the written exam. There is no charge for re sitting as long as it is done within 12 months of the original course.
If you take longer than 12 months to get the evidence you will need to resit the exam and there will be a charge of $100 + GST (if applicable).
Q. How many hours experience do I need?
The Short: It varies
The Long: Some courses, including Dogging, CV Crane, Rigging and Scaffolding, do not have a set minimum number of hours as achieving competency will vary from person to person. Tractor Crane will require a minimum of 65 hours. All Slewing Mobile Cranes will require a minimum of 100 hours.

- Capacity to accommodate 27 aircraft simultaneously
- 40 common use check-in counters
- 9 automated baggage carousels
- 38 retail outlets
- Approximately 2000 car parks
- And will be able to handle in excess of 3000 passengers per hour
Over the 23 month building schedule, the
CITC has provided training for contractors working on the site ranging from Greencard II courses to Safe Working at Heights. The building contractor for the project is Hansen and Yuncken who were recently awarded as South Australia's 2005 Commercial Builder of the Year.

Asbestos Update
Following the Australia-wide
ban on new uses of asbestos in the workplace, which took effect on 31 December 2003, the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission has declared two new Codes of Practice and Guidance Notes for dealing with asbestos.
Some of the changes include:
- To be a qualified Asbestos Removal Supervisor an individual must have both industry experience and have successfully completed all of the appropriate training.
- If a building or site
does not have an up to date
asbestos registry it must be assumed that all materials on that site
contain asbestos (this includes furniture etc.)
- All recycled materials must be decontaminated on site and quarantined according to strict guidelines
- There are now 2 work boundaries for asbestos, the asbestos removal site and the asbestos work site.
Please read the full document for details. The document is available free online here
Workplace Services have two short guides to the current regulations and laws pertaining to asbestos you can access them for free here and here
